ABOUT THE ARTIST

Gay is a storyteller, born-and-bred in Georgia, and deeply inspired by its rich cultural and spiritual traditions. As a daughter of the American South, her work blends Black Southern introspection with spirituality to tell stories about women and girls. Through the lens of Black girlhood and womanhood, Gay explores identity, culture, and power, reclaiming space through storytelling and personal mythology. She challenges dominant histories and expands the Black imaginary, elevating the transformative experiences of women and girls. Using installations, paintings, performance, photography, video, and monumental sculptures, Gay creates immersive environments that invite reflection on race, gender, and self, encouraging a reimagining of identity and belonging.

Gay’s recent exhibitions include Four Women, Museum of Fine Arts Boston, Boston, MA (2024); the European Cultural Centre Personal Structures-REFLECTION, 59th Venice Biennale, Venice, Italy, (2022); Atlanta Biennial, Atlanta Contemporary (2021); Le Monde Bossale, Montreal, Canada, in (2021); Adorned, McColl Center for Arts and Innovation, Charlotte (2020); and Holding Space for Nobility: A Memorial for Breonna Taylor, Ackland Museum, Chapel Hill North Carolina (2020).

Gay exhibits her works and procures residencies within the United States, Europe, Japan, and South Africa. She is a Do-Good Fellow recipient, an Emory University Arts and Social Justice Fellow, (2020) and a Hudgens Prize Finalist (2022). Currently, Gay is a visiting Professor at Spelman College, the Visual Artist-in-Residence at Oglethorpe University, 2022-23 and is one of five Georgia Women to Watch selected by the Georgia Committee of the National Museum of Women in the Arts (2023).
